Elia Lodge

4590

Introduction

We are a Taylor’s working Lodge who meet four times a year at the Civil Service Club, Great Scotland Yard, in Central London, where we also dine after meetings.

Our Lodge was consecrated on the 19th December 1923 following the issue of our Warrant on the 9th October 1923.

The members of Elia Lodge 4590 together with many guests, recently celebrated their centenary at a special meeting held at Bakers’ Hall, London on Tuesday the 16th January 2024. The meeting was attended by a delegation from Metropolitan Grand lodge, including the guest of honour W. Bro. Michael Todd AMetGM.

Following the presentation of the Centenary Warrant by W. Bro. Michael Todd AMetGM our centenary master, W. Bro. Ray Wakeman, was also presented with a 50-year long service certificate for his outstanding services to the craft in general and Elia lodge in particular.

Like many Lodges throughout the years Elia has experienced the highs and lows of membership but a recent resurgence in numbers bodes well as they journey forward into their second century.

Further details of our centenary celebrations will shortly be posted in the ‘about’ section of our website.

Our original members donated towards the building of Freemasons Hall making us a Hall Stone Lodge.

We are a friendly Lodge made up of members from a variety of business and social backgrounds. We welcome with open arms visitors and joining members from other Lodges to our meetings and it goes without saying if you are not currently a member of our wonderful institution you are most welcome to read on through our website and feel free to contact our Secretary (see contact section) if you have an interest in joining Freemasonry and our Lodge in particular.

Our Lodge also has a regular Lodge of Instruction (LOI) and meet on the first and third Wednesday of the months of September to May at Mark Mason’s Hall, situated at 86 St James’s Street, Central London.

We are also affiliated to Elia Chapter 4590 who meet at Southgate Masonic Centre, in North London three times a year, again visitors or those Master Masons thinking of joining the Royal Arch will of course be most welcome, again contact our Secretary for further information.

Why join

Freemasonry is about sharing a common desire for charitable support and following a strict moral code based on the three core principles of Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth and thus improving oneself and others. Membership of our fraternity is open to men of any race, religion, political belief or status.

How to join

One of the most common misconceptions about Freemasonry, and there are of course many of them, is that you must be invited to join. In fact, there is absolutely no reason why you should not ask to join, please feel free to contact us if you find the contents of our website of interest.

FOREWORD: RW Bro. Warren Duke, Metropolitan Grand Master

Freemasonry is a force that evolves with the times, and so too must the ways we connect and share our stories. With this in mind, I am writing to share an important development: Arena, our much-loved magazine, will no longer be printed.

The Art of the Craft – part 1

Freemasonry is influenced by the arts in every form - most obviously the theatrical spectacle of our ceremonies. These are beautiful performances which have the precision and poise of dance. Music is also integral, and good organists introduce the occasional comic riff (I once heard a Grand Inspector piped in to the Star Wars Imperial March, aka Darth Vader’s theme).
